Correctional Admissions Medical Screening (CAMS) software is an innovative, exclusive and first of its kind product for Jail and Police Lock-Up facilities. CAMS is designed to provide correctional staff with an automated Medical and Mental Health screening program to assist in the identification of potential health risk factors during the intake process. CAMS guides inmate management decisions with objectivity and consistency. The software is designed to work as a stand-alone product, or can be incorporated to enhance existing computer systems such as Jail Management, Records Management or Medical Management systems.

CAMS was designed by experienced Correctional and Medical professionals. The goal of CAMS is to improve the accuracy of the health care screen, reduce outside health care costs and lower facility liability. Many facilities already have their health care screen on some type of computer database. The custody officer opens the screen, asks the inmate or arrestee the questions, checks off YES or NO and then closes the screen. Part of the problem however is identifying which YESes or NOs are significant, which should generate a call to the health care staff, which should precipitate an ambulance call and transfer to the hospital, which ones can wait until tomorrow?

The CAMS software takes a different approach to the intake process. Instead of the typical YES or NO responses to questions that cover the major illnesses noted frequently in corrections, it has a built in algorithm to address the positive responses. Once the custody officer has responded accurately to the questions in the algorithm the program will make a recommendation as to whether or not the custody officer should call nursing staff, call an ambulance, or wait until tomorrow.

Training

Even this system, with its improved consistency and accuracy needs the appropriate training. Therefore, prior to utilization there is extensive training of the staff who will utilize CAMS along with on-line suggested policy and procedure. This training not only instructs them on how to use the software but provides considerable information on the disease entities that are addressed in the software.

This training goes far beyond the emergency responder training. For example, custody staff needs to understand that untreated alcohol withdrawal can be lethal. They need to have some idea about the nature of diabetes and the difference between insulin dependent and non-insulin diabetics, etc. The potential serious consequences of lack of treatment of some diseases needs to be explained and understood.

Training for the proper use of the vital signs and video monitoring equipment are also included. Training for the local health care screeners who would be responding tele-video is also available.

Integrated Tele-Video (Tele-Medicine)

In addition, the CAMS solution offers an integrated, cost effective tele-video with built-in camera and microphone and one button access to a medical professional. If the CAMS software recommends the inmate be further assessed the inmate is placed in front of the tele-video monitor, the medical professional appears on the other end, summary information from the CAMS assessment is made available to the medical professional and a further assessment and management recommendation is made while eliminating the need and cost of an on-site visit.
